New South Wales

In NSW, Australia, skin cancer is a significant public health issue, with overexposure to UV radiation from the sun being the primary cause of more than 95% of cases.

Approximately two out of three Australians will be treated for skin cancer in their lifetime, and melanoma is projected to cause hundreds of deaths in NSW annually.

Prevention is key and can be achieved by practicing sun-safe behaviors, such as seeking shade, wearing protective clothing and broad-brimmed hats, applying sunscreen, and wearing sunglasses when the UV index is 3 or above.

Incidence and Impact:
High Rates: Australia has one of the world's highest rates of skin cancer.
Lifetime Risk: Two out of three Australians will be diagnosed with some form of skin cancer in their lifetime.
Melanoma in NSW: In 2021, an estimated 4,941 NSW residents were diagnosed with melanoma, a figure projected to increase to 5,479 in 2024.

Melanoma is the most deadly form of skin cancer.
