Welcome to The Fck Men's Skin Cancer Project

At The Fck Men's Skin Cancer Project, we are dedicated to raising awareness and helping men to identify and manage their skin cancer risks.

Born from our own personal experience of at first ignoring, then dealing with skin cancers, we know that many of us don't understand our risks, what to be aware of, who to connect with to manage these risks or even in some of our cases, or even acknowledge that it could happen to us.

We get it that we can be tough or stubborn.... and sometimes a bit of both!!!

And that is why we are a platform by men, for men, to get through to men just like us.

Our goal is to help men understand, identify and manage their skin cancer risks, how to reduce those risks, who you can reach out to when you think you may have a skin cancer, and to be around for our families and importantly, help make changes in our behaviours to reduce that same risk we have faced with our kids and live a longer, healthier life.

The Fck Men's Skin Cancer Project is a no bullshit information platform that is here to help support men to reduce skin cancer rates in Australia, identify and address skin cancers and bring a keep it simple stupid approach to help guys make a positive difference to how they manage skin cancer for themselves - and their family.

About Us

The Fck Men's Skin Cancer Project is a men's health-focused initiative based in Brisbane.

Our mission is to help men become more aware of their skin cancer risks and take proactive steps to manage them.

Many of us work outdoors and if we aren't working outdoors, we are spending our weekends in the outdoors - playing sport, with the kids, at the beach, camping, fishing and hunting - so knowing about skin cancer, waking up to the dangers and risks and pushing each other to get help for it, is what we are all about.

We want to help men not to make the same mistakes we did when it comes to skin cancers, to manage their risks and take better care of themselves to prevent or deal with skin cancer, and not ignore the problem - it doesn't go away, it just gets worse.

We are about talking directly to blokes, no softly softly approach or beating around the bush, as we want to help other men make a positive change in their view and approach to skin cancer.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many men die from skin cancer in Australia?

In 2024, Australia estimated 892 men will die from melanoma of the skin, according to Cancer Australia. This figure represents the estimated deaths from melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer, which is caused by overexposure to UV radiation.

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer globally, with more than 95% of skin cancers caused by overexposure to UV radiation from the sun.

How many people get diagnosed with a melanoma?

It is expected that 16,800 Australians will be diagnosed with melanoma this year.

This equals 1 Australian is diagnosed with melanoma every 30 minutes.

What are some general facts about melanoma?

  • Melanoma is the third most common cancer in Australia
  • Melanoma is the most common cancer for Australians aged 20 to 39
  • Melanoma is the second most common cancer in Australian men, after prostate cancer
  • If caught early, 90% of melanomas can be cured by surgery.

Why are men at higher risk from skin cancer?

Men are at higher risk for skin cancer due to a combination of biological and behavioral factors, including less frequent sunscreen use, more time spent in the sun, thicker skin that can delay detection, and potential differences in the skin's immune response and repair mechanisms.

These factors contribute to later diagnoses and more advanced disease, which can lead to worse outcomes.
